SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is a Catch-All Phrase for Efforts Associated with On-Line Visibility
The results of where a web page, site, map, product, event, etc. may rank relative to a word, phrase, or concept, and in relation to others (competitors), in the output of data from a search engine service is “rank”. The processes of elevating the rank visibility is search engine optimization (SEO).
Listen below Podcast – “SEO, AIO, GEO, your site, & third-party support to optimize for LLMs”
The Processes of Increasing Rank can be Many:
- More and better content (authority of topic)
- Consistent information across the web (ie Citations – name, address, phone)
- Link backs – legitimate and quality sites and channels linking back to the content
- Quality site building (complying with good site building practices)
- Avoidance of “gaming” techniques or “black hat” methods to “trick” the processes of evaluation
- Site security
- Site performance
- Organic legitimacy (real business, real person, notoriety, etc)
- Organic traffic (readership / viewership through traditional channels) – reinforcing popularity
- News and noteworthy information relative to specific topics
- Phrase or word specificity – broad phrases vs narrowly defined (long tail) phrases. Example: “yachts for sale” vs “philip rhodes designed yachts for sale”
This list is not exhaustive and not in an order of priority. As there are multiple techniques and good practices within each of these list items, there are also methods that should be avoided.
Cumulatively, all “good” practices help. The degree to which they help is a matter of analysis of each project and the initiative priorities.
Search Engine Optimization is an ongoing process and analysis. It is not static.
Using Google search engine results as an example, web site information is routinely calculated for relevance in the context of the data that Google indexes. Google places a weight on the values to the parts of it’s findings. These parts of the “secret sauce”, are what Google uses to calculate its results.
Positive results may take time (weeks – months). Negative results can be more immediate, if site practices are egregious.
